Portland Holds Candlelight Service in Honor of Brittany Maynard

By Chris Meacham

Portland residents held a candlelight vigil in honor of Brittany Maynard on what would have been her 30th Birthday. The nondenominational service was held at First Unitarian Church in downtown Portland. The event was attended by local media and supporters of Compassion & Choices including C&C’s president, Barbara Coombs Lee, who took the podium. Coombs Lee referenced Compassion & Choices national campaign that kicked off the same day saying, “In her name, we will press, we do press other states to offer the same compassionate choices to their residents.” Portland’s KION 6 News was on hand and reported:

Attendees lit candles in Maynard’s memory at the First Unitarian Church of Portland’s Eliot Chapel, where Compassion & Choices President Barbara Coombs Lee co-authored the first draft of the Oregon Death with Dignity Act in a continued push for aid-in-dying legislation across the country. Afterword, attendees gathered for an informal Q&A and refreshments. KOIN 6 video coverage of the event is posted above.
